Kendall was born in South Norwalk, Connecticut, and educated at Columbia University . He did extensive research in endocrinology, successively at Saint Luke's Hospital in New York City , the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Princeton University . His fundamental discoveries led to the isolation of thyroxine , glutathione, and several adrenal cortex hormones. Kendall's outstanding achievement was the isolation of cortisone, for which he was a cowinner of the 1950 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.
