Per la determinazione del momento magnetico dell’elettrone, nel 1955 condivise con il fisico statunitense di origine tedesca Polykarp Kusch il premio Nobel per la fisica. Dopo aver conseguito la laurea in fisica alla University of California a Berkeley, fu professore alla Columbia University di New York, quindi a Stanford, in California, a Oxford , in Inghilterra, e a Yale , nel Connecticut. Nel 1974 divenne professore di fisica all’Universit  dell’Arizona a Tucson, dove rimase fino al prensionamento. Lamb ¨ noto per gli studi compiuti sulla struttura fine dello spettro dell’atomo di idrogeno . Nel 1947 dimostr² che due stati dell’elettrone dell’atomo di idrogeno precedentemente ritenuti degeneri (dotati di uguale energia), differiscono in realt  di una piccolissima quantit . I risultati dell’esperimento, che contraddicevano le previsioni del fisico inglese

L. studiò la struttura degli spettri atomici e lo sdoppiamento di una riga nello spettro dell'idrogeno fu la scoperta che in seguito convalidò sul piano sperimentale la teoria quantistica.
