Encarta Search Search Encarta about Vladimir Prelog Advertisement Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Multimedia 1 item Vladimir Prelog (1906-1998), Croatian-born Swiss organic chemist and Nobel laureate. Prelog shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in chemistry with Sir John W. Cornforth . Both chemists, working independently, studied reactions involving enzymes (substances that initiate specific reactions) and determined for the first time the three-dimensional structure, or stereochemistry, of these reactions. Prelog was born in Sarajevo, in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina. He received his doctorate in chemical engineering in 1929 from the Institute of Technology in Prague, in the Czech Republic, and first worked in that city in a commercial chemical laboratory. He found a teaching position at the University of Zagreb in 1935, but in 1941, when the German Army occupied Yugoslavia, he emigrated to Switzerland. There he joined the staff of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. On becoming director of its Laboratory of Organic Chemistry in 1957, Prelog took the same position previously held by four Nobel laureates. Prelog retired in 1976 and serves on the Board of Directors of the Ciba-Geigy chemical company in Basel, Switzerland
