Purcell and American physicist Felix Bloch shared the Nobel Prize for their contributions in developing new methods to measure the strength of the magnetic field in an atom's nucleus, called nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). A number of important applications came from NMR, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI produces detailed images of the human body, which helps physicians diagnose injuries and diseases.
