Richardson received the 1928 Nobel Prize in physics for his theory of thermionics (the emission of charged atomic particles from a heated surface), which is described in a law that bears his name, and which formed the basis for the development of telephone, radio, television, and X-ray technology. Born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England, Richardson won a scholarship in 1897 to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned his B.S. degree in physics, chemistry, and botany in 1900 and continued his graduate studies in chemistry and physics. He was elected a fellow of Trinity College in 1902, and earned a Ph.D. degree from University College, London, in 1904. At the prestigious Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge, Richardson began his work on thermionics, a phrase he coined, for which he would later become world renowned. In 1906 he moved to the United States to accept a position as head of the physics department at Princeton University, where he taught for seven years. Richardson's book
