Molina , demonstrated that industrial chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) destroy the earth's ozone layer , which shields all plant and animal life from the sun's ultraviolet rays. This discovery led to a United States ban on CFC use in aerosol products in the 1970s, and an international agreement to ban production of CFCs starting in 1996. For his study of ozone depletion, Rowland was awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize in chemistry, which he shared with Mexican-American chemist Molina and Dutch chemist Paul J. Crutzen
