His first published work was the epic prose poem Prometheus and Epimetheus (1881; trans 1931). During his long career, Spitteler wrote in many forms of literature, including essays, children's stories, and novels. Dopo gli studi a Basilea, dove fu allievo di Wilhelm Wackernagel e Jacob Burckhardt , studi² giurisprudenza all'Universit di Zurigo e, in seguito, teologia a Zurigo, Heidelberg e Basilea. Completati, nel 1870, gli studi di teologia, dal 1871 al 1879 fu precettore in Russia e in Finlandia; in questi anni si dedic² alla stesura del poema in prosa Prometheus und Epimetheus , che fece pubblicare a proprie spese nel 1881, con lo pseudonimo di Carl Felix Tandem. L'insuccesso lo costrinse alla professione di insegnante prima (1881-1885) e di redattore poi (1885-1892); dal 1892 si dedic² a tempo pieno alla letteratura.
