Brown . Suo campo di ricerca fu la sintesi organica. In particolare, ¨ conosciuto per la scoperta della reazione che da lui prende il nome (“reazione di Wittig”), che permette di sintetizzare alcheni a partire dai chetoni e dalle aldeidi . Il premio Nobel gli fu conferito per la scoperta del ruolo dei composti del fosforo e del boro come reagenti nella sintesi di composti organici. Dopo aver iniziato gli studi all’Universit  di Tubinga, Wittig fu costretto a interromperli allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, durante la quale trascorse un periodo in Inghilterra come prigioniero di guerra. Dopo il conflitto rientr² in Germania e complet² gli studi all’Universit  di Marburgo, dove si laure² nel 1923. In seguito insegn² in diverse universit  tedesche e diresse l’Istituto di chimica dell’ Universit  di Heidelberg ; si ritir² nel 1965.

En 1916, Wittig commence,   l’universit© de T¼bingen, des ©tudes interrompues par la Premi¨re Guerre mondiale. Apr¨s celle-ci, il termine ses ©tudes   l’universit© de Marburg, o¹ il obtient son doctorat en 1923. Il enseigne ensuite dans plusieurs universit©s allemandes et, de 1965   1967, dirige l’Institut de chimie de Heidelberg. Les premi¨res recherches de Wittig portent sur des mol©cules fortement « constraintes » — c’est- -dire dont la structure subit une tension sans que le produit se d©compose. Pour cr©er et analyser de telles mol©cules, Wittig utilise le compos© chimique ph©nyllithium. Au cours de ces recherches, il d©veloppe le d©hydrobenz¨ne (C H voir R©action chimique ).
