Why is it so much better than the light microscope? Scanning Electron Microscopy is used to determine the surface topography of a sample by scattering an electron beam and detecting the intensity of given off by different regions of the sample. ESEM Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy is defined on page 18.

It beautifully fills the gap between what we can see with our naked eyes and a stereo microscope and the far higher magnification of the atomic force microscope. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) The premier advantage of SEM is its amazing depth of field, which allows the user to see deep into holes or irregular fracture surfaces. Its second most important feature is that most SEMs today also have capabilities to do energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, allowing for determination of the general chemical composition of the sample.

Extractions: NANOART ELECTRON MICROSCOPY NANOART Competition 2006 (Submission is Closed - VOTE is OPEN My artistic process starts in a laboratory where I can create different structures through the means of physics and chemistry. I called these structures Nanosculptures. Basically I make sculptures at molecular level. For my artworks, I also use natural or other man-made structures of different materials commercially available. The next steps are structure visualization and image capture. To accomplish these steps, I am using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Scanning electron microscopy is a method for high-resolution imaging of surfaces. The SEM uses electrons for imaging, much as a Light Optical Microscope (LOM) uses visible light. Conventional light microscopes and photographic cameras, use a series of glass lenses to bend light waves and create a magnified image. The SEM creates the magnified images by using electrons instead of light waves. The images created without light waves are rendered black and white. The advantages of a SEM over a LOM include greater magnification (up to 300,000 X) and a much greater depth of field. Imaging is typically obtained using secondary electrons (SE) for the best resolution of fine surface topographical features. The image resolution for an ideal sample is in the nanometers range. The newer SEMs are PC controlled and therefore the image is captured directly in a computer without the need to print the SEM image and then scan it in a computer.

Extractions: Scanning Electron Microscopy Department METL's SEM department is equipped with a JEOL 35C Scanning Electron Microscope and an Oxford Instruments Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) system. Preparation of samples is supported by the rest of the lab, allowing extraction of specimens from quite large samples. The maximum final sample size which can be placed in the chamber of the SEM is approximately 6x6x2 inches. The stage travel (x-y traversing range) is 0.5 by 1.0 inch.
