It is therefore important to regularly monitor the amount of ozone around the globe. MeteoSwiss is regularily measuring the ozone present in the upper atmosphere above Switzerland with different instruments. MeteoSwiss ozone monitoring Updated on 03.04.2008, 18.00 large.gif, 10 KB The transparency of the atmosphere to the UV radiation from the sun is measured with spectrophotometers. From these measurements, the total amount of ozone contained in the column of atmosphere above the Arosa Observatory is calculated. In the figure to the left, the daily mean ozone is reported for the last 14 days. That year, they published the first scientific article predicting the near disappearance of the ozone layer in 75 years. They were remarkably prescient; in the early 1980s, a hole in the ozone layer was observed for the first time at the Earth's poles. And the numbers were frightening. Over the Antarctic, 70% of the protective gas had disappeared, while 30% had been depleted over the Arctic. Rowland and Sherwood won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1995 for their work in atmospheric chemistry. The illustration shows some layers of the atmosphere. The ozone layer, which protects us from harmful radiation, is part of the stratosphere. Ozone is highly corrosive and toxic and is used as a disinfectant. It can be found in small concentrations in the troposphere where it is considered a pollutant. Since then, a number of other countries have come on board, bringing the total number of signatory countries to 175.

This layer has holes in it through which harmful rays get through. You have probably heard people talk about a "hole" in the ozone layer. Damage to our Earth's giant protective umbrella is more severe at the South Pole, but even there, no actual "hole" exists. Over the rest of the world this "umbrella" is becoming worn out, fragile and thin. But no matter where you stand, you won't find a true "hole". If you have ever noticed the "sharp" clean smell after a thunderstorm or the "electric" smell of a subway train, then you've smelled a bit of ozone gas. In large quantities, ozone is unpleasant. It has a strong odour that irritates the eyes and affects the lungs.

No, but people have had an effect just the same. Thinning of the ozone layer and global warming due to the greenhouse effect are sometimes thought to be one and the same problem. They are actually two entirely different, and serious, environmental problems. In the past, people invented products that were very useful to humans, but not so useful to the ozone layer. These products, like aerosol cans for paint and hair spray, contained gases including CFCs that chewed up ozone and left people and animals exposed to unsafe levels of ultraviolet light, which can cause cancer and eye cataracts. Nowadays, controls are in place to stop these substances from eating up the ozone layer, so hopefully our ozone layer will be steadily restored. Since the Industrial Revolution about 200 years ago, fossil fuels like oil, coal and natural gas have been burnt to create energy, producing greenhouse gases well beyond the amount nature would normally produce.

Ozone here is made when energy from the Sun causes oxygen atoms to split apart. Most of the ozone in the stratosphere is formed over the equator, where the strength of the sunshine is greatest. It is then transported by winds towards the North and South Poles. Hence, the highest amounts of ozone in the ozone layer usually occur at high latitudes, over Northern Europe, Russia and Canada. In the 1970s, scientists discovered that CFCs could destroy ozone in the ozone layer. Extractions: About the exhibit The exhibit has the shape of a regular dodecahedron, a geometric structure with twelve planes. It is painted in unsaturated blue colours with wide cloud bands to resemble the Earth as seen from space. When the visitor approaches the exhibit, he stands at the border of the atmosphere and a window allows him to look down to the Earth through the atmosphere. When he puts his head near to the window a complete large globe is literally created due to the view box is made from a kaleidoscope with slightly tilted mirrors. On the other side of the exhibit, opposite to the view box, 3 large windows allows the visitor to look into the " Ozone factory " consisting of an Oxygen pressurised bottle, an Ozone generator, exhaust pump and filter. Also here a poster shows a graphical presentation of the action of Ozone in the Stratosphere to the radiation spectre from the Sun.

The two are not actually linked. Here is what is known about the causes and results of ozone depletion. In 1984, it was found that the amount of ozone in the atmosphere above Antarctica was much less than expected. Since then, ozone 'holes' have been found over other parts of the world, including Europe. This general loss of ozone in the stratosphere, which is found 15 - 50km above the Earth's surface, is called ozone depletion and is not concentrated in 'holes'. The ozone layer absorbs most of the ultraviolet light coming from the sun. This far ultraviolet light, called UV-B, is harmful to plants and animals. It causes cancers and eye damage in animals, and reduces the growth rate of some plants, including the microscopic plants called plankton living in the oceans, which are an important source of food for animals. How is it caused?
