    Extractions: Paleobotany has made such rapid progress during the last ten years that scarcely any problem involving the anatomy of living vascular plants can be investigated intelligently without some knowledge of Mesozoic and Paleozoic forms. Material, especially that of Paleozoic Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms, is becoming available, and consequently it is increasingly necessary for laboratories to have apparatus and technic for cutting rock-sections. 1. Saw the rock into two pieces. 2. Polish the cut surface. 3. Fasten the cut surface to a piece of glass with hot shellac. 4. With the saw, make another cut, as close to the glass as possible, so as to leave a thin section firmly fastened to the glass. 5. Grind and polish until the section is as thin as possible, or as thin as you want it. 6. Wash all polishing powder off with water. 7. Dry completely and, either with or without moistening in xylol, mount in balsam.

Every subdiscipline of plant science from anatomy and developmental studies to molecular biology and systematics provide insights invaluable for interpreting the fossil record of plants. It is not surprising that plant taxonomy and paleobotany have always been closely allied fields. Just as a plant taxonomist describes names and classifies living plants, the paleobotanist applies the same methodology to fossils. Today plant taxonomy and paleobotany are more strongly allied than ever. You have already read about the use of phylogenetic methods to estimate the evolutionary history of groups of living plants. All those living plants had extinct ancestors and understanding the fossil record of a group of plants can provide the plant taxonomist with clues of when and where modern groups originated and how they obtained their present distribution. Today plant taxonomists work closely with paleobotanists and use data from the fossil record along with phylogenetic methods to estimate when major lineages of modern plants appeared. In the past, a plant taxonomist studying a family of flowering plants would examine only material from herbaria. Now it is common place to either look at fossil material from the group or work in conjunction with a paleobotanist.

    paleobotany is the study of fossil plants found buried in sediments and rocks, and is one of many fields of study within the broad science of botany.

    Extractions: Plants, unlike most animals for example, naturally break apart into pieces while they are alive. For example, pollen is released in the Spring (causing one's allergies to act up) and leaves fall in the Autumn. In fact, it is quite normal to find a leaf here, a branch there and a seed somewhere else. When a plant dies, the plant breaks apart into still more pieces. When looking for fossil plants, a leaf is found here and a branch is found over there. It is relatively rare to find a leaf attached to a branch to show that they belong to the same plant. As a result paleobotanists usually give a different name to each part of a plant until they can show that they were part of the same plant (that is, they find the leaf attached to a branch). This method of naming fossil plants is why there are different names for different parts of a single plant.
