The GSC's collections and cumulative knowledge are an invaluable and inexpensive source of information that can be used to advantage before committing to further investment in exploration prospects in many areas. Enhanced collaboration among paleontological and other geoscientists can only result in a better understanding of Canada's geology and resource potential.

Extractions: The FLMNH vertebrate fossil collections feature rich samples of all classes, mainly from the Cenozoic Era. More than 90% of the collections come from about 1000 marine and non-marine sites in Florida; other contributing regions are the Caribbean Basin and the South American Andes. Included are about 400,000 specimens, of which more than 240,000 are catalogued and 225,000 are currently on a searchable computer database . Holotypes number about 200 specimens. The FLMNH vertebrate fossil collections include the former Florida Geological Survey Collection and the UF Department of Zoology Fossil Bird Collection (assembled by the late Professor Pierce Brodkorb). Each of these collections is maintained in a separate catalog, under the acronyms UF/FGS and UF/PB, respectively. The FLMNH collections provide the most complete basis available for study of Cenozoic vertebrate paleontology in the southeastern United States and the Caribbean Basin. Biogeographically these collections record critical episodes in the history of ancient Florida over the past 50 million years.

The discovery sheds light both on the origins of monkeys in North America and on the conditions of the continent during the massive global warming of 55 million years ago. It suggests that primates came across a land-bridge that once connected Asia and Alaska, where conditions were tropical. "These primates only inhabited tropical and subtropical forests. Wet, muggy, warm climates," said Chris Beard , lead researcher on the discovery and a paleontologist at Carnegie Mellon Natural History Museum. "That tells you a lot about the Bering land itself, indirectly. Think about Costa Rica in Alaska." The primate migration occurred during what is known as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, a warming of the Earth that Beard described as "one of the only times in history where the rate and magnitude (of global warming) is similar to what's happening today." The Earth's continental structures, however, looked very different from how they do today. For a brief time, 55.8 million years ago, North America was connected to both Europe and Asia by narrow strips of land.

Extractions: The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' paleontology collection includes approximately 32,000 vertebrate, 18,000 invertebrate, and 500 paleobotanical specimens. The single most important specimen among the Museum's paleontological holdings is the world's best-preserved and most complete Acrocanthosaurus atokensis . Beginning in April 2000, the Museum will be the only place in the world to see an articulated, real Acrocanthosaurus skeleton on display. The Museum also holds a nearly complete specimen of the dinosaur, Thescelosaurus , shown here at left. Vertebrate specimens include fish, mammals, reptiles, and dinosaurs. Catalogued fish specimens total 20,000, the Museum's most extensive fossil vertebrate holdings. Most of these are from the Pliocene of North Carolina. A large collection of Cretaceous crocodilian and turtle specimens makes up most of the reptilian portion of the paleontology collection. A good collection of North Carolina dinosaur material also exists. The fossil mammal collection holds one of the largest clusters of giant ground sloth ( Eremotherium ) bones of the Pliocene/Pleistocene age ever found North of Florida. These fossils were donated by the city of Wilmington, N.C. A sloth skeleton is being articulated for display in the Museum beginning in April 2000.
