Extractions: Cottonwood County, Minnesota In the midst of a vast prairie in southwestern Minnesota massive ridges of very ancient rock rise up to lie just below the surface of the ground. On this watershed divide, among the tall grass, there are a few places where the underlying rock breaks through to the surface. Buried for millennia, the stone preserves evidence of ancient watercourses in the rippled surfaces of sand that were slowly solidified by heat and pressure. Gradually thrust to the surface and rough-polished by glacial ice, a "canvas" was created that became a medium for the signs and symbols of ancient American Indians. Imprinted in this scoured rock face are fleeting images that bear testimony to the generations of earlier inhabitants of this land. These forms are found carved in a score of locations, however one of these places surpasses all the rest by virtue of the abundance and diversity present there. This place is today known as the Jeffers Petroglyphs Painting and engraving of rock are some of the oldest surviving forms of human expression.. This expression is a worldwide phenomenon with tens of thousands of sites on six continents. The images in different regions are distinctive with characteristic styles, subjects, and methods of execution. Petroglyphs, or carved rock designs, and pictographs, or painted rock designs, are known by the general term rock art. In what are now the states of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado, prehistoric hunter-gatherer Indians began to decorate canyon walls, rock shelters, and boulders with rock art several thousand years ago. Navajos, Apaches, Pueblo Indians, and even Spanish soldiers and settlers continued to create rock art over the centuries. They probably did it for many reasons: aesthetic, magical, religious, historical, astronomical, as a part of hunting ritualsor a combination of the above. Archaeologists believe that rock art is much more than meaningless doodles. And contrary to popular belief, it was not created by the inhabitants of sunken, mythical continents, it does not represent maps to buried treasure or depict extraterrestrials, and it was not intended as a form of writing. Rock art does provide a means of understanding the sacred as well as the mundane in prehistoric and historic Indian culture. It is a way of recognizing cultural relationships and the patterns of communication and commerce among individuals and tribes. Changes in rock-art styles often reflect new ideologies and religious practices. However, the quality of the rock art and the level of sophistication of the culture it belongs to are not necessarily related.

So what's this petroglyph from the Zalavruga site, on the southern coast of the White Sea, show us? Well for one thing, it may be the oldest picture in the world showing people skiing. It is also a hunt. The animal is a moose. This art becomes much more intriguing and complex when you look at it from their point of view. For instance, they were not only killing animals but also taking the body of one of their gods into themselves. This is a whale boat from Zalavruga on the White Sea. The people are carved in detail, which means they are distinguished as individuals. Each person onboard this boat would have recognized himself or herself from the glyph. I believe the second figure is likely a woman. Judge for yourself. Some people believe that this is the oldest picture of a whale in the entire world. 2000

For six field seasons since 1995 my colleagues and I have been conducting an intensive archaeological survey on Ometepe Island. With the assistance of numerous volunteers in the last three years, we have to date recorded 73 sites and over 1400 boulders with petroglyphs (almost 1700 petroglyph panels). Although we are still in the data entry and initial analysis stage of our work, I welcome the opportunity to provide an introduction to a little known but exciting and unique area of rock art in Latin America. Indeed, I think Nicaragua may come to be recognized as one of the great rock art areas of the world with Ometepe Island as perhaps the center of that tradition.

By pecking with a hammerstone, or cutting with a sharp stone knife, native South American peoples who were otherwise without written symbols utilized geometric forms in graphic expression. South American petroglyphs are divided geographically and stylistically into four separate groups: Patagonian; Ando-Peruvian; Colombian-Venezuelan; and Brazilian (Boman 1908; Rouse 1949). Patagonian petroglyphs consist of simplistic figures such as footprints of birds, animals, human beings, human hands, and concentric circles and squares. Those of the Colombian-Venezuelan group include human or animal figures, always without details of clothing or ornament, with those from the eastern slopes of the Colombian more resembling Amazonian types, showing human faces and possible supernatural beings emphasized through simple, repeated curvilinear or swirling. Brazilian petroglyphs feature schematic representations of fish, animals, and human beings, as well as common designs of faces, circles, and the spiral (fig.2). Ando-Peruvian petroglyphs, by contrast, employ the most complicated designs of all, with frequent representations of birds, animals (including felines and llamas), and human beings. The gigantic Nazca figures in southern Peru represent the Ando-Peruvian style.

Extractions: ROCK ART IN UTAH Utah rock art was described in National Geographic magazine as a "wilderness Louvre," a world-class outdoor art museum. The quality and quantity of Utah's prehistoric rock art is unmatched anywhere. From the mummy-shaped human figures of heroic proportions in the Great Gallery of Horseshoe Canyon to the incised stones from Hogup Cave, Utah's rock art is beautiful and varied. In its most basic definition, rock art is any design on stone. Those which are incised, scratched, rubbed, or pecked into the surface of the rock are called petroglyphs. Painted designs are referred to as pictographs. Occasionally the word petrograph is used as a generic term for both pecked and painted designs. Other terms used for rock art, such as picture writing or Indian writing, attach a significance to the design that may or may not have been intended by its creator. Who created the rock art? While it is speculated that a petroglyph in the Moab area and a pictograph in Ferron Canyonboth of which may represent mammothsmay represent work by Ice Age artists more than 10,000 years ago, the earliest rock art can be more safely attributed to the Archaic Culture of more recent times. Hunters and gatherers who were successful at harvesting a wide variety of plants and small game animals in various ecological niches, these people were probably responsible for the red-painted, mummy-shaped figures in eastern Utah known as the Barrier Canyon style as well as other (primarily abstract) rock art images found throughout the state. Scholars generally agree that the earliest rock art is at least 2,000 years old.

Extractions: Dinosaur Art By Native Americans (Petroglyphs) Evidence that Dinosaurs and Humans co-existed Natural Bridges National Park, Utah Dr. Dennis Swift, brought to our attention, petroglyphs under one of the spectacular bridges in White Rock Canyon within Natural Bridges National Monument near Blanding, Utah. The lower left photo shows men pointing to where the etchings are located. The park literature attributes the petroglyphs to the Anasazi who inhabited the area from approximately A.D. 400 to A.D. 1300. Can you see the dino? A book on Indian rock art sold at the park visitors center says, "There is a petroglyph in Natural Bridges National Monument that bears a startling resemblance to a dinosaur, specifically a Brontosaurus, with a long tail and neck, small head and all." (Prehistoric Indians, Barnes and Pendleton, 1995, p.201) The desert varnish, which indicates age, is especially heavy over this section. An example of Native American rock art carved into the walls of Grand Canyon. It was discovered in 1879 by E. L. Doheny and documented in 1924 by a scientific expedition which included Dr. Charles W. Gilmore, Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, United States National Museum. The resulting publication reported as "fact" that "some prehistoric man made a pictograph of a dinosaur on the walls of this canyon..."
