Aikido was created in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Before creating aikido, Ueshiba trained extensively in several varieties of jujitsu, and in swordsmanship. Ueshiba also immersed himself in religious studies and developed an ideology devoted to universal socio-political harmony. Incorporating these principles into his martial art, Ueshiba developed many aspects of aikido in concert with his philosophical and religious ideology.

Extractions: The Aikido Center of Los Angeles is dedicated to practicing Aikido and Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido as traditional Japanese martial arts. The ACLA is located in the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles next to Little Tokyo. The Dojo was established in 1974 by Reverend Kensho Furuya, Aikido 6th Dan and Iaido 6th Dan Kyoshi. Furuya Sensei was a direct student of the late Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba and trained at the Aikido World Headquarters Hombu Dojo in 1969. We are directly affiliated with the Aikido World Headquarters, Hombu Dojo Aikikai. The Dojo is also the Headquarters for the Los Angeles Sword and Swordsmanship Society which is dedicated to the study of Japanese swords and the discipline of Japanese swordsmanship, Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido and Toyama Ryu Iaido. The Aikido Center of Los Angeles also offers classes for children and we will be expanding the program after the move into the new dojo.

The History Kokikai-Ryu Aikido founder Sensei Shuji Maruyama began his study of Aikido in 1955 under Koichi Tohei Sensei who was at the time chief instructor of Aikido under Master Ueshiba. Later after receiving an introduction from Tohei, Maruyama Sensei apprenticed directly with Master Ueshiba. Aikido was developed by the founder of Aikido Master Ueshiba in the samurai tradition of Budo. Master Ueshiba placed emphasis on maximizing human potential â emphasizing strength and efficiency through the coordination of mind and body. Through a special realization he was able to develop his potential power. The essence of his realization was that he discovered how to use only necessary strength. He understood his natural human ability and how to use that ability correctly and efficiently, and he applied his understanding to develop a system of new techniques that would eventually solidify into the art known as Aikido. The Refinement In the further development of Kokikai Aikido, Maruyama Sensei has stayed true to Master Ueshibaâs tradition and has refined the techniques to make Aikido more effective in modern circumstances. Maruyama Sensei has caught Ueshibaâs feeling for using only necessary strength, using the minimum effort necessary to achieve maximum results, but he now applies that feeling to technique responsive to the realities of modern unarmed fighting. Kokikai Aikido practice is characterized by realistic, focused attacks, and the fluid responses that employ timing and rhythm to take the opponents balance completely before the application of a throwing technique.
