The various types of sleds came several years before the first tracks were built in St Moritz , where the original bobsleds were adapted upsized Luge Skeleton sleds designed by the adventurously wealthy to carry passengers. All three types were adapted from boys delivery sleds and toboggans . Competition naturally followed, and to protect the working class and rich visitors in the streets and byways of St Moritz, hotel owner Caspar Badrutt , owner of the historic Krup Hotel and the later Palace Hotel built the first familiarly configured 'half-pipe' track circa 1870. It has hosted the sports during two Olympics and is still in use today.

They warmed the hearts of many worldwide in their first attempt at Olympic glory and was even immortalized in the popular Walt Disney movie "Cool Runnings". Since then the team has been a mainstay in the Winter Olympics and now have their eyes focused on bringing back a medal to Jamaica. In the first games (1988) the team was seen as a novelty as they had many technically difficulties, injuries and crashes. In the second games (1992) the team had drastically improved. They had practiced hard for 4 years and were confident and focused. The 4-man team came in 14th ahead of the US, French, Russian and Italians teams. This was just the beginning. In the 2-man event the Jamaican team shocked the world by beating the Swedish national champions and coming in 10th place. The team has continued to improve and took in 2000, and took gold at the World Push Championships in Monte Carlo in three events and posting the fasted start time at the World Cup.
Extractions: @import url(http://fawny.org/blog/css/WP-specific.css); Non-freakonomics of bobsleigh Surely by co¯ncidence, most of my â friends â as designated âon the Facebookâ are bobsledders. Some are Republicans, Christians, Harperites, Monacans, Utahans, Australians, Calgarians, Moroccans, or some combination thereof. (Incidentally, what is it with Monaco and bobsleigh? In the principality that A.A. Gill derides so much , bobsleigh is to the winter Olympics as equestrian is to the summer.) A bobsledder is pretty much guaranteed to be a weightlifting sprinter in tip-top condition. The skinniest ones weigh 200 pounds soaking wet in a Speedo, which means that the gold-medal podium at Nagano, where Italy and Canada actually tied for first , groaned under the weight of 830 pounds of bobsledder. As with sports heavily reliant on equipment, bobsleigh is almost entirely pointless (a plus), and, like car racing, there isnât much to recommend it as a spectator sport. Nonetheless, nontrivial bobsleigh photography is achievable, as wee Moroccan French Monacan bobsledder Anas Adoui (no relation) demonstrates. There are barely any big, strong, tall sprinters in the world. You might be some of those, but you need all of them to push a sled. The kind of guy who might be biomechanically suited to bobsleigh is the same kind of guy who is socially more suited to football or hockey (or just spending an hour a half a day in the weight room). Bobsleigh âfederationsâ worldwide are constantly short of athletes.

TORINO, Italy (CNN) Unlike more traditional sports, bobsleigh racing was developed purely as a leisure pursuit in search of the ultimate thrill ride in the 19th century. Descriptions of toboggans, however, are found as early as the 16th century. In Olympic competition, bobsleigh events are held for two-man four-man and two-woman teams along 1,300-meter or 1,600-meter tracks. The men's competition is held over two days, with four runs. The team with the lowest aggregate time after all four runs wins. The women's competition is held on one day, with only two runs. The team with the lowest aggregate time after both runs wins. In both competitions, if two teams are tied they are awarded the same place. Runs are timed to hundredths of seconds. Team members push the sled for the first 50 or 60 meters to build momentum before climbing in. The team member at the front drives the sleigh, while the team member at the back applies the brake after the course has been completed.

Extractions: There are only 12 bobsleigh tracks in the entire world approved by the sport's international governing organization. The 2002 Olympic track in Park City, Utah, is the southernmost track in the world and is designed for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events. Engineers faced several challenges during construction of the $25 million venue. To build the smoothly curved, vertical walls along the track they used shortcrete, a form of concrete that is sprayed onto a reinforced steel structure containing refrigeration tubes. To create the ice surface, the concrete is cooled to -12 degrees F (-11C) and water is sprayed on until a 2-inch layer of ice is formed.
