Extractions: It's not how we think of America in 2007: starving pit bulls tearing one another apart, "bait" dogs torn apart in minutes, "losers" beaten, shot or electrocuted, all as spectators leer, cheer and place their bets. But, as the indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick makes clear, such blood sport is common throughout the U.S., no longer confined to rural backwaters but increasingly popular in major cities and suburbs. And, perhaps most frightening to pet owners, the vicious blood sport feeds off of stolen household pets used as "bait." Although Vick pleaded not guilty Thursday in Richmond, Va., to federal charges that he sponsored and participated in a dogfighting operation, revelations since his arrest make it clear that dogfighting is riding a new wave of popularity.

Dogfighting Posted to Dogfighting Michael Vick News Suffolk By Dave Forster SUFFOLK Vick was set to stand trial April 2 on felony counts of animal cruelty and dogfighting, but prosecutor Gerald Poindexter said last month the case could be pushed back. An assistant in his office confirmed today that it would be continued. Vick, Peace and Phillips are serving prison sentences for their federal case. They pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to run an interstate dogfighting operation from 2001 to 2007 on land that Vick, a Newport News native, owned in Surry County. Poindexter cited logistical problems in transporting the men to face their state trials as the need for the delays. Vick is in Kansas, Peace is in New Jersey and Phillips is in Florida, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons Web site.

Extractions: Dogfighting penalties to get tougher Legislation would elevate dogfighting violations to felonies in Georgia. .at. albanyherald.com The Senate Wednesday unanimously passed a House bill making it a felony to own, sell, train or transport dogs for purposes of fighting, or to sponsor, advertise or host a dogfighting event. Under the legislation, introduced by Rep. Bobby Reese, R-Sugar Hill, adults attending dogfights would be charged with a misdemeanor on the first offense. But spectators would face felony charges on subsequent offenses. Tougher penalties against dogfighting failed in the General Assembly during the last two years amid opposition from hunters worried that some of the provisions could affect their activities. But the effort gained momentum when former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick went to federal prison after pleading guilty to helping operate a dogfighting ring on property he owned in Virginia. Because of those changes, it now goes back to the House. Click Here To Send This Story From Your E-Mail Program Main Telephone: 229.888.9300 Look up a reporter's contact information The Albany Herald

In the wake of the high-profile indictment of NFL quarterback Michael Vick on federal dogfighting charges, and the national outrage over dogfighting crimes, new legislation has been proposed to further strengthen the nationâs laws to combat the cruel practice of dogfighting. Three billsâS.1880, introduced by Sen. John Kerry (D-MA); H.R. 3219, the Dog Fighting Prohibition Act, by Rep. Betty Sutton (D-OH); and H.R. 3327, the Federal Dog Protection Act, by Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-CA) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR)âwould make all participation in dogfighting, including being a spectator at a dogfight and possessing dogs for the purpose of fighting, a federal felony, and would increase the maximum penalty from three years to five years in prison. The Humane Society of the United States urges members of Congress to support S. 1880, H.R. 3219, and H.R. 3327.

Legislation that would put tougher sanctions on spectators at dogfights and ease restrictions on the confiscation of dogs believed to be involved in dogfighting was heard on Monday night by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill, proposed by Sen. Scott Rupp, R-St. Louis, and co-sponsored by Sen. Chuck Graham, D-Columbia, would make it a felony to be a spectator at a minimum of two dogfights. Rupp said that in light of recent cases, the committee should look at treating dogfighting spectators in the same way they do participants.

Extractions: RICHMOND, Va. - Michael Vick was sentenced to prison Monday for running a dogfighting operation and will stay there longer than two co-defendants, up to 23 months, because he lied about his involvement when he was supposed to be coming clean to the judge who would decide his fate. The disgraced NFL star received a harsher sentence than the others in the federal conspiracy case because of âless than truthfulâ statements about killing pit bulls. Vick said he accepted responsibility for his actions, but U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson said he wasnât so sure.

Extractions: In what will look like a scene from the popular family movie, "Evan Almighty", scores of Animal Chaplains around the world will bless hundreds, perhaps thousands of animals in many different settings on October 4th 2007. At a pet cemetery on the east coast, to a city park in the desert, to a sandy beach on the west coast, they will walk in on a leash, fly in on a harness, and slither in their cages. Barking, mewing, bleating, mooing, whinnying and purring will join human voices in hymns of praise and worship. World Animal Day is a day dedicated to honoring, blessing, and protecting animals all over the world. World Animal Day was founded at an ecologist's convention in Florence, Italy in 1931 as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. October 4th was chosen as World Animal Day because it is also the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, a Catholic Church holiday which is often celebrated with an annual "blessing of the pets". Since then, it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and has been widely celebrated around the world. Churches and synagogues in many faiths traditions have adopted "Pet Blessing Day" or "World Animal Day" in increasing numbers every year.
