They cranked up the mountain's muddy hills. Over rocks and through impossible-at-first- glance terrain. Down boulder-choked, narrow singletrack. Up and down for miles, without a single crank on pavement. "I've never pushed as hard as I did today," said Daewon Mickelson, a 24-year-old Durango local whose relatively recent loss of leg power from a ski accident did nothing to slow his lung-bursting arm cranking in Saturday's soggy 2-mile hill climb, a race in which the handcycling newcomer placed third. "That was so hardcore. When I ride with my friends in Durango, they kind of baby me. These guys out here are like: 'You better keep up or you're getting left behind."'

Grinning at the hands reaching out to him for high fives, the Denver resident turned his sweaty, radiant face to his competitors. "I cranked it as hard as I possibly could, and you guys were just gone," Reilly said. "I couldn't breathe." The 2.5-mile hill climb marked his first off-road handcycle race, where he finished eighth. But, more importantly, he found his place in an intimate community. Athletes of every level gathered in Crested Butte on the last weekend of August for the second annual Off-Road Handcycling World Championships. The championships provide an arena for disabled athletes to compete in a mountain bike event on some of the toughest terrain in the country. The riders use handcycles, which employ arm power instead of leg power. The unique and technical cycles are equipped for mountain terrain and look like it compared to the more common road handcycles. The athletes competed in a hill climb and a cross-country race on the steep slopes of Mt. Crested Butte, powering their three-wheeled, 45-pound cycles through rocks, roots and mud.

August 29th, 2007 The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana hosted the handcycling races at the Indiana Stage Race last weekend and the event, as well as the racing, was first class all the way. Standouts in the C1 category were David Randall and Brian Mitchell, who have been duking it out all season long, and both appear to have the talent to race internationally in the not-so-distant future. In the HCB Category, John Gilger (aka JSG) was the top guy all weekend and is making a late season comeback after a broken leg put him on the sidelines earlier in the season. In the HCA race, newcomer Thomas Kahler won the all three races in close competition with crafty veteran, James Watson, and it was great to hear of exciting racing in all categories at the event. The Indiana Stage race hosted handcycling for the 2nd year and the growth of the event signifies the success of the U.S. Handcycling series. The event featured just 5 athletes in 2006 and grew to 14 for 2007. Many athletes competed in other U.S. Handcycling series events earlier in the season, and the racing scene is growing thanks to organizations like the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana.
