Extractions: Handcycling began in the 1980s as a recreational sport. Early equipment was hard to find, clunky, and expensive. The leap from âleg onlyâ powered to âarm poweredâ was made by cyclists from within the ranks of the human powered vehicle movement. Ironically, the original handcycle was not intended for someone with a disability. Nonetheless, the development made it possible for individuals of all abilities to experience the joy of cycling. Today, handcycles reap the benefits of both the modern cycling industry and cutting-edge wheelchair technology, including light weight components, high pressure tires, wide-range gearing systems, hi-tech. seating systems, hydration systems, and ingenious steering systems for optimal handling. Handcycling was approved as part of the IPC Cycling Program in 1998 and was included at the World Cycling Championships for the Disabled that same year. In 2004, the IPC included a race for handcycles (men only) at the Paralympic Games in Athens Greece for the first time. Although handcycle racing is still relatively new, it has become very popular worldwide and athletes in the U.S., Europe, and Australia compete in respective national race series. Although handcycling is popular with the racing crowd, most handcycles are purchased by recreational athletes. In contrast to racing wheelchairs, handcycles are easily adjusted, simple to operate, and very easy to transfer in and out of. As a result, thousands of people with and without disabilities are handcycling to improve cardiovascular and aerobic health, increase upper body strength, ride with friends and family, and improve overall fitness.

Much is written about the elite athletes and the mega-long-distance riders, but most of us are just your three-or-four-times-a-week-, a-few-miles-a-day type of the average person looking to stay in shape, have some fun, and meet some new people riders. Extractions: DenverPost.com Mt. Crested Butte - "Whoa, hey, be careful!" Steve Ackerman is about to tip over and the lady watching his hand-cranking ascent of a steep rocky pitch is quite worried. He's not. "What, you don't like carnage?" said the 52-year-old Fort Collins handcycling legend, as he leaned over his pedals with powerful strokes. "I'm all about carnage." Ackerman's huge arms propel his handcrafted machine up and over a pile of rocks without any bloodshed. He's followed by a dozen other athletes, each testing the boundaries of their abilities and disabilities on unique three-wheeled machines as part of last weekend's inaugural off-road World Handcycling Championships on Crested Butte's steep ski hill. They cranked up the mountain's muddy hills. Over rocks and through impossible-at-first- glance terrain. Down boulder-choked, narrow singletrack. Up and down for miles, without a single crank on pavement. "I've never pushed as hard as I did today," said Daewon Mickelson, a 24-year-old Durango local whose relatively recent loss of leg power from a ski accident did nothing to slow his lung-bursting arm cranking in Saturday's soggy 2-mile hill climb, a race in which the handcycling newcomer placed third. "That was so hardcore. When I ride with my friends in Durango, they kind of baby me. These guys out here are like: 'You better keep up or you're getting left behind."'

Grinning at the hands reaching out to him for high fives, the Denver resident turned his sweaty, radiant face to his competitors. "I cranked it as hard as I possibly could, and you guys were just gone," Reilly said. "I couldn't breathe." The 2.5-mile hill climb marked his first off-road handcycle race, where he finished eighth. But, more importantly, he found his place in an intimate community. Athletes of every level gathered in Crested Butte on the last weekend of August for the second annual Off-Road Handcycling World Championships. The championships provide an arena for disabled athletes to compete in a mountain bike event on some of the toughest terrain in the country. The riders use handcycles, which employ arm power instead of leg power. The unique and technical cycles are equipped for mountain terrain and look like it compared to the more common road handcycles. The athletes competed in a hill climb and a cross-country race on the steep slopes of Mt. Crested Butte, powering their three-wheeled, 45-pound cycles through rocks, roots and mud.

Handcycling News The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana hosted the handcycling races at the Indiana Stage Race last weekend and the event, as well as the racing, http://www.ushf.org/HCNews/
Extractions: Latest News about Handcycling in the U.S. and abroad. August 29th, 2007 The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana hosted the handcycling races at the Indiana Stage Race last weekend and the event, as well as the racing, was first class all the way. Standouts in the C1 category were David Randall and Brian Mitchell, who have been duking it out all season long, and both appear to have the talent to race internationally in the not-so-distant future. In the HCB Category, John Gilger (aka JSG) was the top guy all weekend and is making a late season comeback after a broken leg put him on the sidelines earlier in the season. In the HCA race, newcomer Thomas Kahler won the all three races in close competition with crafty veteran, James Watson, and it was great to hear of exciting racing in all categories at the event. The Indiana Stage race hosted handcycling for the 2nd year and the growth of the event signifies the success of the U.S. Handcycling series. The event featured just 5 athletes in 2006 and grew to 14 for 2007. Many athletes competed in other U.S. Handcycling series events earlier in the season, and the racing scene is growing thanks to organizations like the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana.
