Building on the popular canoe and kayak "floats" and the popularity of the "Tour de Necklace", IGO is branching out to offer cycling "rides" throughout the park district this summer. Much like our "floats", the "rides" will be relaxed outings in different regions of the park district, allowing you to discover the gems of the Emerald Necklace with your friends and family following our extensive All Purpose Trails. These programs are open to cyclists of all ages and are accessible to people of all abilities. Helmets are mandatory for all riders. Watch for the 2008 Schedule Soon! Extractions: Handcycling 101 Everything you ever wanted to know about handcycling, but were afraid to ask P eople say riding a bike is so easy, you never forget how to do it. Riding a handcycle is so easy, you wonât know why you hadnât yet tried it. Handcycling has been around for more than two decades, and the design of the trikes that have revolutionized exercise and recreation for people with disabilities continues to improve, making them faster, more agile, and more accessible for anyone who wants to get in the saddle. The crank of a handcycle is positioned near the upper body of the rider and propels the front wheel, rather than the rear wheel, of the cycle. Handbrakes, located near the hand pedals or seat (depending on model), work the same as typical bicycle brakes. The seats, or saddles, on handcycles are more supportive than bicycle seats, resembling the seats used on recumbent bikes. Rather than being designed specifically for people with disabilities, the first handcycle design took shape in the hands of nondisabled cyclists looking to increase the use of human-powered vehicles. Although they have failed so far to spawn a new age for American transportation, they did create the opportunity for people with disabilities to get back in the saddle.

Located far to the east of North Carolinaâs mainland, wedged between the Great Dismal Swamp and the Continental Shelf, the Outer Banks is a tranquil, remote, desolate, and beautiful place. It is a place like no other. It is a land where beauty comes easily and nature coexists with only those hearty few who call it home. The Outer Banks is the birthplace of flight and it is where I recently traveled for a 120-mile handcycling journey that became as much about personal growth and discovery as it was about athletic achievement and accomplishment.

Extractions: Andrew Reid It was seven months after I moved from Ottawa, Canada to the good ole US of A Austin, Texas to be exact that I ended up in a wheelchair. Life couldn't have been better. I was 28 years old, working for a great software company, kickboxing 40 rounds per week, and chillin' out in the sun 300 days a year. It was November 24, 1999 that I took off to San Diego, the land of beautiful waves, for a four-day surfing adventure. I had planned the trip several weeks before for my first American Thanksgiving weekend, and now the date had arrived. I couldn't have been more excited since it had been about a year-and-a-half since I'd danced on the waves. I wish I could tell you that the trip went without glitches, but then you wouldn't be reading this article, if it had. The next few days were a blur. My mom and dad got that fateful call in Canada and, of course, my mom thought "why does he have to do all that crazy stuff" (surfing, snowboarding, kickboxing, rock-climbing)? Of course, they didn't know at that time that it wasn't so traumatic. I guess it was about a week before they moved me out of emergency and into rehab, Scripp's Memorial to be exact. By the way, my mom had arrived as soon as she could and either my mom or dad never left my side until my return to Canada, which was a month later when I got out. All the staff at Scripps was fantastic. At that time I wasn't ready to accept anything to do with being in a wheelchair so when the physical therapists (PTs) told me that life is not over and there are plenty of great wheelchair sports, I'm like, "Yeah right! How the heck will I ever kickbox again?"
