Extractions: Minnesota may have some unusual and often funny high school nicknames (Aitkin Gobblers , Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms , Roosevelt Teddies , Minnetonka Skippers and Moorhead Spuds ) for their sports teams, but compared to high schools in other states, we are downright boring. Here is a list of some of the more interesting names we found: California - San Benito Hay Balers (Euphemisms galore - Part I.), Hollywood Shieks (Sounds more like the name for a strip club than a high school sports team.), John Marshall Barristers (The only kids in America who know the definition of the word tort.), Yuba City Honkers (The girl voted most popular in her class definitely earned the distinction.)

Extractions: Concordia High School athletes compete in three sports seasons: fall volleyball, winter basketball and spring soccer. Whatever the season, Concordia's athletic teams have experienced tremendous success. In the 2005-06 school year, for instance, teams brought home five championship and three runner-up trophies. As members of ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools), teams compete against other Shanghai international and Chinese high schools throughout each season. In the 2005-06 school year, teams began official conference play within Shanghai with the formation of the Shanghai International Schools Athletic Conference (SISAC), of which Concordia was a founding member. Each season concludes with the national ACAMIS and Shanghai's SISAC tournaments, hosted by one of the member schools. ACAMIS tournaments present travel opportunities for the select teams to such cities as Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Beijing and Tianjin. Concordia students occasionally have the home field advantage when Concordia hosts the tournament. Campus comes alive as games fill both gymnasia - High School and Middle School - and fans closely follow tournament play. Concordia's sports facilities are the envy of other China international schools. Teams practice and play on the school's internationally sized soccer field and in the excellently equipped High School gymnasium, featuring two full-size basketball courts, pull-out bleachers and fully furnished locker rooms. The Middle School's gymnasium - the Phoenix Center - provides an additional basketball court.

Did you know that the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League is in full swing? Every winter, hundreds of area high school and junior high students from about a dozen area school districts participate in the ice hockey league, which has its own Web site. The games are played at the Rink at Lehigh Valley in Whitehall or at the Steel Ice Center in South Bethlehem. And a couple times a week, the games are televised on cable TV. The league has two divisions: Pure and Non-Pure. Pure teams have players from the same school district. Non-Pure teams are a mixture. This year, Northampton and Parkland are the top teams in the Pure Division. Stroudsburg leads the Non-Pure division. So, if you get a chance, check out a game in Whitehall or Bethlehem. The action is fast-paced and exciting and the kids are talented. E-mail comments and questions by clicking on the Comment link below.

Nascar Positive Teen Development through High School Sports High school sports and joining in the available sports programs that schools have is seen to have a positive effect on a lot of teens. Indulging in high school sports gives teenagers a lot of benefits not only in health due to the active lifestyle but it also helps them learn how to cope with the different aspects of life due to the constant interaction with people they encounter along the way. High school sports give teenagers the opportunity to excel at something they enjoy as well as show them the values associated with being part of a team, doing their best and the values of sportsmanship. High school sports also open teenagers to see the benefits of hard work and discipline. These values can be learned early on in life if a child starts to join sports programs that their schools put out at the elementary level and they get to enhance and enrich such awareness in these values in high school when they join the high school sports programs available to them. When students join high school sports activities either as athletes or simply as supporters of the athletes that are in these teams, they get to practice their interpersonal relationship skills as well as experience what good community and school relations should be. They get to experience what it is like to bask in the glory of winning and how to handle the disappointments of defeat. As such, these experiences will prepare them for life in the real world where triumphs and failures abound and knowing how to cope with these things can be learned from the different high school sports activities they participate in. This is how important high school sports programs are and how necessary it is for parents to encourage their children to try and participate in them.
