Extractions: Landsailing is the sport of moving over sand and land, using a kart carrying a sail for wind propulsion. The Aruban plains are the perfect spot for this way of sailing! The wind-driven kart is light and comparatively small and is mounted on 3 wheels. The front wheel is attached to a system that steers the kart. You have to steer with your legs! Controlling the kart also requires control over the sail. It is almost comparable to the skills needed for sailing a normal (though easy-going) water boat. Now, the only signs of life here at historic Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, N.Y., are the clatter of sanitation trucks echoing off the few remaining hangars, the occasional hum of a police helicopter flying training exercises, and a man in a big black truck who roadtripped down from Rhode Island to show us his idea of excitement in a bag.

This road ends at a 7500 ft. peak overlooking a majestic panoramic view of the High Desert below. Approximately 20 miles to the north, as the crow flies, lay the El Mirage dry lakebed. From our vantage point, we can soak in the massive expansions of this desert depression. The powdery, white, alkaline soil outlines the contours of this ancient lakebed. Many people are familiar with El Mirage from the countless TV commercials and music videos that have been filmed there. The moonscape is a dramatic backdrop for nearly any photographic event, but this vast lakebed is far more than a visual curiosity. For many people in Southern California, it is recreational ground zero. Dirt bikes, ATC's, hot-rods, and of course, land-sailors have made this their secondary home, but of all the activities on El Mirage, none is quite as exciting as land sailing. With El Mirage's vast, nearly endless terrain and like-clockwork prevailing winds, the lake attracts sailors from, literally, all around the world.

We'd seen pictures of ice boats rocketing across frozen lakes, and their cousins with wheels careening across desert sands and ocean beaches, so we were anxious to give them a try. Finally the wind picked up enough for my 100 pound son, Erik to jump into the blue, streamlined Club model. With minimal coaching by Bede Kortegast, Playaboule's representative, he was off, sailing around the tarmac at Sand Point with increasing speed. The wind continued to build and when Erik came out of a turn on two wheels I knew there was enough wind to move even my considerable bulk. Actually the wind was only about eight knots, but it was plenty to get a feel of what these machines can really do. Pretty soon we blasting all over the place, with speeds in the gusts that made our eyes widen almost as much as our smiles. For a "water" sailor, the speeds these vehicles reach with comparably little wind is astounding. Recreational models do about two to three times the wind, while more high speed models can go five or six times the windspeed. In poking around the net I read about one that did 105 m.p.h. in 18 m.p.h. of wind! We didn't get near that, nor did we want to. Going in the high teens to mid-twenties was plenty fast, and seems even faster when you're only a few inches off the ground. Trimming the sails is quite easy. The sails are like windsurfer or Hobie Cats sails, made for faster speeds. Because of your ground speed compared to the actual windspeed, your apparent wind comes way forward so you're basically close reaching or relatively close hauled most of the time. This makes life pretty easyyou just pull it in and go.
