Of course we were anxious to try it out ourselves, so we aranged a little trip to the west-coast of Denmark. Unfortunately I was not able to write about it earlier, because I wanted to add the pictures (to be seen after the break) to the entry as well. We went to R¸m¸ with two cars and a total of 6 people from our group, guided by the project leader from MCI (technical department of SDU). Bruno, the guy that received our landyacht, was already present at the beach. He brought both our landyacht and one of his own, so we could everyone had plenty of oppurtunity to have a go. He explained us a little bit about what to do and how to put on the sail and stuff. After this short introduction we were good to go... Unfortunately there wasn't very much wind to 'sail' with, so we moved up a little bit further on this very big beach (as you can see on the pictures below). Finally there was enough wind to get the landyacht moving, and everyone had a try. When it was my turn to take a seat in our 'precious', it turned out that my head was far to big for any of the helmets available. As you can see at the pictures I could not be bothered and just put it sort of on top of my head. It looked very stupid, but I really couldn't care less. Seriously, landyachting is so much fun! At some point the sail catched the wind very good, and the landyacht speeded up. I tightened the sail more and more; at some point one of the back wheels came of the ground. That scard the shit out of me and made the adrenaline rush even bigger.

In the major classes the profile of the mast is extremely elaborate and its area is included in the sail surface. In the minor classes (Manta, Standart, Class 5, Five, Fed 5) you can find standard aluminium pipes which are sometimes made up of two parts. With regard to the Standart, in the luff there is a zippered pocket which contains five cambers used to give the mast a wing profile. To come to a good knowledge of the different classes which take part in national and international competitions it is necessary for me to talk about the two main associations which rule the world of the landyacht. In Europe the landmark is represented by Fisly, whereas in the U.S.A. this sport is regulated by Nalsa.

This camp marks the culmination of two years planning, fund raising and hard work by all those involved. To our surprise we found it was ! There followed some major fundraising schemes, appeals, begging and trials and tribulations in order to find the necessary money, people and equipment for a nine day trip to France. We finally got there and on Friday 4 th August 2000, we all arrived, at 04.30 am, to get on the coach to take us to France. Friday 4 th August. An uneventful journey takes us to Portsmouth for the ferry to Cherbourg, meeting one of our special needs children outside the ferry terminal. We now have the full complement; 7 leaders, 1 nurse/leader, 21 Special Needs Children, 21 Able bodied partners (made up of Venture Scouts, young Leaders, Ranger Guides, D of E Gold participants and Student Nurses). N.B. (The campsite consists of four separate smaller sites, we have one of them to ourselves. It contains a marquee, where we congregate, have meals and sit if it is too hot/wet to sit outside. There are 16 frame tents, each with a wooden floor and steel framed beds. These tents are positioned in a circle around a volleyball court. The ground is sand. Meals are cooked by Acorn Venture staff at a central kitchen and then carried out to each camp and served out at the marquee).
