We are a competitive sports club sponsored by the Division of Recreational Sports at UT and compete on the Collegiate level in the USA Powerlifting Association. We, as well as the USAPL, are a drug-free organization and do not promote the use of steroids or other illegal substances. We train throughout the year on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 3-6 pm in the Gregory Gym powerlifting room. Powerlifting consists of three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. Check out the website to read a detailed description of each lift. In competition you make three attempts in each lift, and your best attempts are added together to create a combined total. Ranking in a meet is based upon this combined total. Specialized pieces of equipment such as a squat suit, bench shirt, knee wraps, and a powerlifting belt are used as protection against injury. The $65/semester dues allow for team-paid entry into one meet a semester, admittance into the reserved powerlifting room, and use of team equipment. There is also a $40/semester option for non-competitive members. In addition, we offer structured workout sessions, experienced coaches, a chance to compete for the University of Texas, and a shot at winning a National Championship this year.

Powerlifting The sport of powerlifting explained with information on the Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift. What to Gene Rychlak, Mike Miller, Andy Bolton, http://www.nlpbodybuilding.com/powerlifting.html
Extractions: The sport of Powerlifting explained with information on the Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift. What do Gene Rychlak, Mike Miller, Andy Bolton, and Garry Frank have in common? They hold the World Records and are the best at the Bench Press, Squat, Deadlift, and Total respectively! The sport of Powerlifting is designed to test a weight lifters absolute strength in 3 static lifts. These three lifts, the Squat, Bench Press, and the Deadlift are supposed to represent the three main forms of lifting weights, Pushing, Pulling, and Squatting. Improve your Powerlifting with this great deadlift article. The Squat is considered by many to be the most important and productive form of strength exercise in existence. A powerlifter can use more weight in this exercise than in any other, by using the strong legs, hips and back to their full advantage. Doing a maximum effort Squat also takes some courage. Unlike some exercises, if you cant lift the weight, you could be in for a serious injury. It is very important to have a spotter around who knows how to spot for a person squatting with heavy weights. Competitive Powerlifting usually demands that lifters wear special Squat Suits to give them support and help them lift more weight. They also wear knee wraps and thick Power Belts. Some of them also wear Groove Briefs, which are basically the bottom half of a squat suit, underneath their Squat Suit. Powerlifting equipment is essential to be competitive at the National Level and higher!
Extractions: This rather shocking photo was snapped in November 16th by a spectator at the collegiate power lifting championships at Pennsylvania State. The unfortunate competitor, who expressed a plea to remain anonymous, remembered to surgeons that he was "stuck" at the bottom of a personal best attempt in the squat lift when he "sort of pulled his stomach in and pushed extra hard, at the same time as trying to complete the lift." He remembers a loud popping, splattering noise then a fierce stabbing pain and then not being able to move from the squat position. He remained in this position for about half an hour, since trying to stand caused him overwhelming agonizing pain. Paramedics arrived and applied anaesthesia on the spot and carried him to an ambulance. He was rushed to surgery, where surgeons described the trauma as an "explosive and aggravated prolapse of the bowel". Meanwhile it was revealed that the weight was removed from his shoulders at the time of the incident by two "spotters" on either side of the lifter. The third spotter who was standing behind the lifter was unfortunately sprayed with fecal matter at the time of the incident. This spotter promptly fainted when he realized the extent of the injury to the lifter, who was a personal friend. This compounded the task of first aid officers who were at a loss as to how to treat the injury to the lifter in any case, who remained in the squatting position moaning in pain much to the consternation of the helpless audience.
