Posted by Spiros Papavasiliou in Arts section Rhythmic gymnastics combines ballet and creative movements to music, while working with ribbons, balls, hoops, ropes and clubs in a choreographed dance-and-tumble routine. Everything is done on the floor with far different routines and different music. Rhythmic gymnastics started as an independent competitive sport in the early 1950's by the Russians. Then in 1963 the first rhythmic gymnastics world championship was held in Europe. Even though rhythmic gymnastics has its own world championships it did not become an Olympic medal sport until 1984. All of those strains were combined, around 1900, into the Swedish school of rhythmic gymnastics, which later added more dance elements from Finland. About the same time, Ernest Idla of Estonia established a degree of difficulty for each movement. Ten European countries took part in the first world championships, held in 1973 in Budapest, Hungary. Individual rhythmic gymnastics was added to the Olympic program in 1984 and team competition was added at the 1996 Atlanta Games. The hall For official events, the hall must have a minimum ceiling height of 8 metres. The floor of 13 x 13 metres must be surrounded by a safety area one metre wide. Flexible and stable at the same time, this floor must be capable of absorbing the energy stemming from the movements, as well as any unexpected shocks. Its covering should not be such as to result in skin damage from rubbing.

Extractions: Rhythmic gymnastics was introduced to North America in 1906 thanks to a Finnish-Canadian [athletic] club in Toronto, but it didn't gain much popularity. During the 1960s, the club's coach, Evelyn Koop, took her teams on tours of Canada, giving [exhibition]s and conducting clinics. Preferring to call the sport "modern gymnastics," the Canadian Modern Gymnastics Federation was created in 1969 as the governing body there. It was renamed the Canadian Modern Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation in 1971, and finally became the Canadian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation in 1981. In the United States, the sport is governed by [USA Gymnastics]; that organization also supervises [artistic gymnastics] in all fifty states. The U.S. didn't make an appearance at the rhythmic World Championships until 1973, and continues to be one of the lower-ranked countries in a sport dominated by [Eastern Europe]ans.

Extractions: Subscribe I've been watching rhythmic gymnastics and, although it's clearly not a sport, I find it almost unbelievably fascinating. These women are so flexible and graceful and flexible and flexible and so on... They intrigue me, for some indefinable reason. However, when they finish they don't do a "And they're my breasts" at the end, which is very disappointing. I like the "And they're my breasts" things which the other female gymnasts do at the end of their routines (you know, backflip, spin, twirl, land, regain balance, and... "they're my breasts"), it's such a blatant final grab for points from the male judges. You have to admire that. I do think, however, that, given the propensity for the "And they're my breasts" conclusion to the gymnast's routines that they should consider letting a girl in with only moderate gymnastic ability but really great breasts. Because I think that she would win.
