Extractions: Gizmodo Gadgets SkiBob is like a miniature jet ski that can pull you along on the surface or under water. It uses a combination of a 5hp electric motor along with an electric jet stream to propel you through the water at a brisk 12.5mph, letting you swim faster than all but the quickest fish. It's safe, too, turning off and floating back to the surface if you let go of it. If you're not wearing scuba tanks, you can set it to automatically turn off when it gets to a depth of around 8 feet, but then you can set it for a maximum depth of over 120 feet if you're a brave soul with air tanks on your back. How does it work?

Extractions: Skibob Origins Skibobs are not a new phenomenon; they have been around for many years, although today they are often called Ski Bikes or Snow Bikes. Many people credit a Mr. J. Stevens, an American, for the invention of the Skibob, as in 1892, he obtained a patent for an "Ice Velocopide" - a Bicycle with skis fitted in place of the wheels. However, this was only a patent, and did not result in the starting of a new sport. The true origins of modern Skibobbing were in the late 1940's, when a German Engineer, Georg. Gfäller invented and obtained a patent for a "single track steerable sledge", and an Austrian Engineer, Engelbert Brenter invented and obtained a patent for a "Sit Ski". When both designs were combined, the result was a Skibob. During the 1950's and 1960's, the sport grew in popularity, and the Skibob became a common method of winter transport for those living in the Austrian and Swiss Alps, a habit that lives on today with many Skilift attendants - Just look behind this hut, the chances are you will find a skibob waiting to take him home at the end of the day.

Extractions: The downhill event in particular was the greatest challenge ever in world skibob competition. Although the course was short by previous standardsâonly a mile and a halfâit made up for its length by steepness and a 500 ft. headwall so steep, skiers would not venture down it. The one skier who did, an Austrian skibob coach on skis, the morning of the race ended up with a broken leg. But among the skibob competitors, there were no injuries and only four fell on the steep schuss. The Swiss team coach, predicting ten racers would be killed, refused to allow his racers run the downhill.
